| THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT |
 |
Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint is referred to broadly as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Identifying TMD can sometimes be difficult, and involves careful evaluation by a dentist or physician. The patient's description of symptoms combined with a physical examination of the face and jaw provides information very useful for diagnosing TMD. Pain, particularly in the chewing muscles and the jaw joint area is a common symptom along with complaints of limited jaw motion (can't open widely without pain) or locked jaw. Headaches, painful jaw clicking or popping, and the dental bite not coming together properly are also common symptoms, in addition to earaches, dizziness and hearing problems. |
